Salok Vaaraan Te Vadheek (Mehl 1), Salok 24 — Coming and Going Without Joy

ਮਾਣੂ ਘਲੈ ਉਠੀ ਚਲੈ ॥
maanoo ghalai uthee chalai.
The mortals are sent into the world; then, they arise and depart.
ਸਾਦੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਇਵੇਹੀ ਗਲੈ ॥੨੪॥
saad naahee ivayhee galai. ||24||
There is no joy in this. ||24||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

People are sent into the world; then they get up and leave.

There is no joy in a thing like this.

A life that only arrives and leaves has no joy in it.
The deeper layer

Arriving and leaving, with nothing more, has no joy in it.

Maanoo ghalai uthee chalai: people are sent, and they rise and go. Saad naahee ivayhee galai: there is no taste, no joy, in such a thing. The verse stops there, stark on purpose. Read beside the saloks around it, the missing joy is the Naam.

A Question to Sit With

What makes a day feel like more than just something you got through?
