Salok Vaaraan Te Vadheek (Mehl 1), Salok 23 — Without the Guru, No Wisdom

ਗੁਰ ਬਿਨੁ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਧਰਮ ਬਿਨੁ ਧਿਆਨੁ ॥
gur bin gi-aan Dharam bin Dhi-aan.
Without the Guru, there is no spiritual wisdom; without Dharma, there is no meditation.
ਸਚ ਬਿਨੁ ਸਾਖੀ ਮੂਲੋ ਨ ਬਾਕੀ ॥੨੩॥
sach bin saakhee moolo na baakee. ||23||
Without Truth, there is no credit; without capital, there is no balance. ||23||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Without the Guru, there is no wisdom; without right living, there is no meditation.

Without Truth, there is no credit; without money put in, there is nothing left over.

Wisdom grows from the Guru, meditation from right living, and credit from Truth.
The deeper layer

Each good thing grows from its own root: wisdom from the Guru, meditation from right living, credit from Truth.

Gur bin gi-aan: without the Guru, no wisdom. Dharam bin Dhi-aan: without Dharam, right living, no Dhi-aan, deep attention. Sach bin saakhee: without Truth, no credit. The last picture is from a shop's account book: moolo na baakee, with no money put in, there is no balance.
