Salok Vaaraan Te Vadheek (Mehl 3), Salok 44 — The True Emperors

jinaa satgur ik man sayvi-aa tin jan laaga-o paa-ay.
Those who serve the True Guru single-mindedly - I fall at the feet of those humble beings.
gur sabdee har man vasai maa-i-aa kee bhukh jaa-ay.
Through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, the Lord abides in the mind, and the hunger for Maya departs.
say jan nirmal oojlay je gurmukh naam samaa-ay.
Immaculate and pure are those humble beings, who, as Gurmukh, merge in the Naam.
naanak hor patisaahee-aa koorhee-aa naam ratay paatisaah. ||11||
O Nanak, other empires are false; they alone are true emperors, who are imbued with the Naam. ||11||

In plain words

Those who serve the True Guru with a single mind — I fall at the feet of those humble people.

Through the Guru's Word, the One comes to live in the mind, and the hunger for Maya — the pull of the world — goes away.

Spotless and bright are those humble people who turn to the Guru and merge in the Naam.

Nanak says: all other kingdoms are false. Only those filled with the Naam are true emperors.

Every other kingdom passes; a heart full of the Naam is the true kingdom.
The deeper layer

A heart full of the Naam holds the only kingdom that lasts.

Jinaa satgur ik man sayvi-aa: those who serve the Guru with one mind. The speaker falls at their feet. In them, har man vasai, the One lives in the mind, and maa-i-aa kee bhukh, the hunger for Maya, leaves.

They are nirmal oojlay, spotless and bright, merged in the Naam. The last line turns power around: naam ratay paatisaah, those dyed in the Naam are the true emperors. Every other empire passes.

A Question to Sit With

What would make your heart feel full, the way a king's treasury is full?
