Salok Vaaraan Te Vadheek (Mehl 3), Salok 43 — The Ego That Wears Us Out

ਨਾਨਕ ਹਉ ਹਉ ਕਰਤੇ ਖਪਿ ਮੁਏ ਖੂਹਣਿ ਲਖ ਅਸੰਖ ॥
naanak ha-o ha-o kartay khap mu-ay khoohan lakh asaNkh.
O Nanak, acting in egotism, countless thousands have wasted away to death.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਮਿਲੇ ਸੁ ਉਬਰੇ ਸਾਚੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਅਲੰਖ ॥੧੦॥
satgur milay so ubray saachai sabad alankh. ||10||
Those who meet with the True Guru are saved, through the Shabad, the True Word of the Inscrutable Lord. ||10||

In plain words

Nanak says: countless thousands, living for "I, I, me, me," have worn themselves out and died.

Those who meet the True Guru are saved, through the True Word of the One who is beyond knowing.

Living for "I, I" wears you out; the Guru's Word lifts you free.
The deeper layer

Living for "I, I" wears a person out; the Guru's Word lifts them free.

Ha-o ha-o kartay khap mu-ay: saying "I, I" in everything, countless people have worn themselves out until the end. Haumai, ego (the feeling of being a separate self), works like a sickness that slowly drains a person.

The cure is meeting the True Guru. Saachai sabad alankh: through the true Word of the One no one can fully describe, people are lifted out. Ego is the illness; the Word is the medicine.

A Question to Sit With

When has the voice inside you that shouts mine, mine left you feeling more tired instead of more full?
