Salok Vaaraan Te Vadheek (Mehl 3), Salok 42 — The Word That Dissolves Sorrow

ਦੂਖ ਵਿਸਾਰਣੁ ਸਬਦੁ ਹੈ ਜੇ ਮੰਨਿ ਵਸਾਏ ਕੋਇ ॥
dookh visaaran sabad hai jay man vasaa-ay ko-ay.
The Word of the Shabad is the Dispeller of sorrow, if one enshrines it in the mind.
ਗੁਰ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਤੇ ਮਨਿ ਵਸੈ ਕਰਮ ਪਰਾਪਤਿ ਹੋਇ ॥੯॥
gur kirpaa tay man vasai karam paraapat ho-ay. ||9||
By Guru's Grace, it dwells in the mind; by God's Mercy, it is obtained. ||9||

In plain words

The Shabad, the Guru's Word, takes sorrow away, if a person keeps it in the mind.

By the Guru's grace it comes to live in the mind; by the One's mercy it is received.

The Guru's Word takes sorrow away, and by grace it comes to live in the mind.
The deeper layer

The Guru's Word can wash sorrow away, when it lives in your heart.

dookh visaaran sabad hai — the Shabad, the Guru's Word, is the remover of sorrow. But it must be man vasaa-ay, settled in the mind. Think of a favorite song that plays in your head on a hard day. It does not stop the hard day. It helps carry you through it.

How does the Word get there? gur kirpaa tay man vasai — by the Guru's kindness, it comes to live in the mind. karam paraapat ho-ay — by the One's mercy, it is received.

So the Word is a gift, not a prize you grab. Grace is always there for a heart that opens to it.

A Question to Sit With

Is there a phrase, a memory, or a truth you can hold onto that helps steady you when you are sad?
