Salok Vaaraan Te Vadheek (Mehl 1), Salok 6 — Turning Grief into the Naam

ਹੈ ਹੈ ਕਰਿ ਕੈ ਓਹਿ ਕਰੇਨਿ ॥
hai hai kar kai ohi karayn.
They cry and weep and wail.
ਗਲ੍ਹ੍ਹਾ ਪਿਟਨਿ ਸਿਰੁ ਖੋਹੇਨਿ ॥
galHaa pitan sir khohayn.
They slap their faces and pull their hair out.
ਨਾਉ ਲੈਨਿ ਅਰੁ ਕਰਨਿ ਸਮਾਇ ॥
naa-o lain ar karan samaa-ay.
But if they chant the Naam, the Name of the Lord, they shall be absorbed into it.
ਨਾਨਕ ਤਿਨ ਬਲਿਹਾਰੈ ਜਾਇ ॥੬॥
naanak tin balihaarai jaa-ay. ||6||
O Nanak, I am a sacrifice to them. ||6||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

They cry out, "Alas, alas!" and weep and wail.

They strike their cheeks and pull at their hair.

But those who take the Naam are absorbed into it.

Nanak says: I give myself to them.

Those who take the Naam in their sorrow are absorbed into the One.
The deeper layer

Loud mourning shows the grief; taking the Naam lets a person rest in the One.

Hai hai kar kai: crying "alas, alas," the old way of mourning, with people striking their cheeks and pulling at their hair. The verse sets beside it naa-o lain ar karan samaa-ay: those who take the Naam and merge into it. Grief is still there; the Naam gives it somewhere to rest.

A Question to Sit With

When you are sad, what helps you feel held instead of alone with it?
