Salok Vaaraan Te Vadheek (Mehl 1), Salok 5 — When the World Forgets How to Love

ਨਾਨਕ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਕੈਸੀ ਹੋਈ ॥
naanak dunee-aa kaisee ho-ee.
O Nanak, what has happened to the world?
ਸਾਲਕੁ ਮਿਤੁ ਨ ਰਹਿਓ ਕੋਈ ॥
saalak mit na rahi-o ko-ee.
There is no guide or friend.
ਭਾਈ ਬੰਧੀ ਹੇਤੁ ਚੁਕਾਇਆ ॥
bhaa-ee banDhee hayt chukaa-i-aa.
There is no love, even among brothers and relatives.
ਦੁਨੀਆ ਕਾਰਣਿ ਦੀਨੁ ਗਵਾਇਆ ॥੫॥
dunee-aa kaaran deen gavaa-i-aa. ||5||
For the sake of the world, people have lost their faith. ||5||

In plain words

Nanak says: what has happened to the world?

No guide is left, and no friend.

Even brothers and relatives have let their love go.

For the sake of the world, people have lost their faith.

When people trade their faith for the world, the love between them goes cold.
The deeper layer

When people chase the world, the love between them goes cold.

naanak dunee-aa kaisee ho-ee — "Nanak, what has happened to the world?" Guru Nanak looks at the world and feels sad. No one has a guide or a friend left. Even brothers and relatives have let their love go. Then comes the reason: dunee-aa kaaran deen gavaa-i-aa. For the sake of the world, people have lost their deen, their faith and inner devotion.

Think of a family dinner where everyone is staring at a phone. They sit side by side, but no one is there. Chasing things works the same way: the more we grab, the less room is left for the people we love.

A Question to Sit With

Have you ever seen chasing after stuff make someone forget to be kind, and how did it feel to watch?
