Salok Vaaraan Te Vadheek (Mehl 3), Salok 57 — the Naam is what carries us

ਨਾਮਿ ਲਗੇ ਸੇ ਊਬਰੇ ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਜਮ ਪੁਰਿ ਜਾਂਹਿ ॥
naam lagay say oobray bin naavai jam pur jaaNhi.
Those who are attached to the Naam, the Name of the Lord, are saved; without the Name, they must go to the City of Death.
ਨਾਨਕ ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਸੁਖੁ ਨਹੀ ਆਇ ਗਏ ਪਛੁਤਾਹਿ ॥੨੪॥
naanak bin naavai sukh nahee aa-ay ga-ay pachhutaahi. ||24||
O Nanak, without the Name, they find no peace; they come and go in reincarnation with regrets. ||24||

In plain words

Those who hold on to the Naam are saved; without the Naam, they go to the city of death.

Nanak says: without the Naam there is no peace; they come and go, full of regret.

What you hold on to decides whether you float or sink.
The deeper layer

Holding on to the Naam carries a person across; without it there is no peace.

Naam lagay say oobray: those attached to the Naam are lifted out and saved. Jam pur, the city of death, is the old picture for a life that ends far from the One. Aa-ay ga-ay pachhutaahi: without the Naam, people come and go with regret. Naam here is the living presence of the One, kept in mind now, while we are here.
