Salok Vaaraan Te Vadheek (Mehl 3), Salok 56 — hatred only burns the one who holds it
Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
The True Guru, the Great Being, holds hatred for no one; his heart is always tuned to the One.
Whoever stirs up hatred against the one who hates no one only sets fire to their own house.
Anger and ego are inside them; night and day they burn, always in pain.
They keep telling lies, barking like dogs, having eaten the poison of love of "the other."
Chasing the poison of Maya, they wander from house to house and lose their honor.
They are like a child who does not know his father's name.
They do not remember the Naam of the One, Har, Har; the Creator Himself leads them astray.
The One pours mercy on the Gurmukhs, and brings the separated ones back close.
Nanak says: I would give myself for those who fall at the True Guru's feet.
Hatred aimed at someone who hates no one burns only the one who holds it.
Satgur purakh nirvair hai: the Guru is nirvair, without hatred, a word also found in the Mool Mantar. Apnai ghar lookee laa-ay: whoever builds hatred against such a person sets a torch to their own house. Anger and ego burn inside them day and night.
Koorh bol bol nit bha-ukday: they keep barking out lies. For the sake of Maya they go from door to door and lose their honor. The old picture of baysu-aa kayray poot, the son of a woman whose child has no known father, means a person with no true name to carry, cut off from where they came from.
The salok ends with mercy: the One pours grace on those who turn to the Guru and brings the separated back close.
If someone is being unkind to you or hurting you, that is never something you have to accept. Telling a grown-up you trust is always the right thing to do.
When you have been angry at someone, who did the anger hurt most?
