Salok Vaaraan Te Vadheek (Mehl 3), Salok 71 — what stays steady

maa-i-aa moh baho chitvaday baho aasaa lobh vikaar.
Mortals give great thought to Maya and emotional attachment; they harbor great hopes, in greed and corruption.
manmukh asthir naa thee-ai mar binas jaa-ay khin vaar.
The self-willed manmukhs do not become steady and stable; they die and are gone in an instant.
vad bhaag hovai satgur milai ha-umai tajai vikaar.
Only those who are blessed with great good fortune meet the True Guru, and leave behind their egotism and corruption.
har naamaa jap sukh paa-i-aa jan naanak sabad veechaar. ||38||
Chanting the Name of the Lord, they find peace; servant Nanak contemplates the Word of the Shabad. ||38||

In plain words

People think a great deal about Maya and attachment; they carry many hopes, full of greed and wrong.

The manmukhs — those who follow only their own wants — never become steady; in a moment they die and are gone.

With great good fortune one meets the True Guru, and leaves behind ego and wrong ways.

Nanak says: remembering the Naam of the One, peace is found; I think deeply on the Word.

Peace built on the Naam stays when everything else passes.
The deeper layer

Things come and go. Keep close to what stays steady.

People think hard about Maya, money and things. They carry many hopes, mixed with greed. The manmukh, the person who follows only their own wants, never becomes asthir, steady. Such a life can be gone in a moment.

Think of a sandcastle at the beach. It looks great, but one wave takes it. Building only on things is like that.

vad bhaag hovai satgur milai — with great good fortune, a person meets the True Guru. Then they let go of pride and wrong ways. har naamaa jap sukh paa-i-aa — remembering the Naam, they find peace. Put your love into what lasts, while you are here.
