Salok Vaaraan Te Vadheek (Mehl 3), Salok 81 — the temple is inside you

har mandar har saaji-aa har vasai jis naal.
The Lord built the Harimandir, the Temple of the Lord; the Lord dwells within it.
gurmatee har paa-i-aa maa-i-aa moh parjaal.
Following the Guru's Teachings, I have found the Lord; my emotional attachment to Maya has been burnt away.
har mandar vasat anayk hai nav niDh naam samaal.
Countless things are in the Harimandir, the Temple of the Lord; contemplate the Naam, and the nine treasures will be yours.
Dhan bhagvantee naankaa jinaa gurmukh laDhaa har bhaal.
Blessed is that happy soul-bride, O Nanak, who, as Gurmukh, seeks and finds the Lord.
vadbhaagee garh mandar khoji-aa har hirdai paa-i-aa naal. ||48||
By great good fortune, one searches the temple of the body-fortress, and finds the Lord within the heart. ||48||

In plain words

The One built the Temple of the One, the Harimandir, and the One lives in it.

Through the Guru's teaching, I have found the One; my attachment to Maya — the pull of the world — has burned away.

In the Temple of the One are countless treasures; remember the Naam, and the nine treasures are yours.

Nanak says: blessed is the happy soul-bride who turns to the Guru, searches for the One, and finds Him.

By great good fortune, one searches the temple-fortress of the body and finds the One right there in the heart.

The most sacred place you will ever visit is your own heart.
The deeper layer

The One built the body as a temple and lives inside it.

Har Mandir here is the body as the dwelling-place of the divine — the same insight that later gave the Golden Temple its name, but pointed first at the human being. The "nine treasures" is a traditional image of complete wealth, relocated from the outer world to the inner life. The search ends where it began: within.

A Question to Sit With

If the answer were already inside you, what would change about how you look for it?
