In plain words

The manmukhs — those who follow only their own wants — wander in all ten directions, driven by fierce wanting, greed and wrong.

Their attachment to Maya never ends; they die and are born again and again.

Serving the True Guru, peace is found; fierce wanting and wrong ways are left behind.

Nanak says: thinking deeply on the Word, the pain of birth and death is gone.

You can chase in every direction, or you can turn toward one true center.
The deeper layer

Wanting sends the mind running in every direction; serving the Guru brings it home to peace.

Manmukh dah dis fir rahay: the self-willed wander in the "ten directions," the whole compass plus up and down, a mind scattered everywhere. At tisnaa lobh vikaar: fierce wanting, greed and wrong drive them, and the round of birth and death goes on.

Satgur sayv sukh paa-i-aa: serving the Guru, peace comes and the wanting is left behind. The change is a turning, from the outward chase toward the Word, and with it janam maran kaa dukh, the pain of birth and death, is gone.

A Question to Sit With

When your mind is running everywhere at once, what brings it back?
