Salok Vaaraan Te Vadheek (Mehl 3), Salok 86 — true words, true lives
Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
True are the faces and true are the beards of those who speak the Truth and live the Truth.
The True Word, the Shabad, lives in their minds; they melt into the True Guru.
True is their savings and true is their wealth; they reach the highest place.
They hear the Truth, they trust the Truth, and they do true work.
They are given a seat in the True Court; they melt into the True One.
Nanak says: without the True Guru, the True One is not found. Those who follow their own mind wander off, lost.
When speaking, hearing, trusting and doing all rest on Truth, a person becomes one with the True One.
The word sach comes again and again — true face, true words, true wealth, true Court. Sach means honesty, and it also means the True One, the One who lasts. Sach suneh sach man lain: they hear the Truth, they take it to heart, and then they act on it — sachee kaar kamaahi.
The last line turns: vin satgur sach na paa-ee-ai, without the True Guru the True One is not found. The manmukh, the person who follows only their own mind, wanders off lost.
Where in your life is there a gap between what you say and what you do?
