Walking With My Face Uncovered

laaj marantee mar ga-ee ghooghat khol chalee.
My shyness and hesitation have died and gone, and I walk with my face unveiled.
saas divaanee baavree sir tay sank talee.
The confusion and doubt from my crazy, insane mother-in-law has been removed from over my head.
paraym bulaa-ee ralee si-o man meh sabad anand.
My Beloved has summoned me with joyful caresses; my mind is filled with the bliss of the Shabad.
laal ratee laalee bha-ee gurmukh bha-ee nichind. ||12||
Imbued with the Love of my Beloved, I have become Gurmukh, and carefree. ||12||

In plain words

The shyness that used to hold me back has fallen away — now I walk with my face open to the light.

The doubts my wild, fretful mother-in-law kept hanging over my head have lifted right off.

My Beloved called me close with joy, and the Word filled my mind with happiness.

Colored deep in my Beloved's love, I glow now — turned toward the Guru, and free of worry.

When love reaches you, the old fears simply fall away.
The deeper layer

The seeker is a bride meeting the Beloved. Ghooghat khol — casting off the veil means dropping fear and false modesty. The fretful mother-in-law (saas) stands for Maya, the worldly pull that keeps a heart doubting; it is a picture of an inner weight, never of anyone's real family. Nichind — carefree.

A Question to Sit With

What worry would you love to feel lift right off your head?
