Sikhism·Dakhnee Onkaar·Shabad 111
Verse 17 of 55

At Home Everywhere With the Name

vin naavai vayroDh sareer.
Without the Name, even one's own body is an enemy.
ki-o na mileh kaateh man peer.
Why not meet the Lord, and take away the pain of your mind?
vaat vataa-oo aavai jaa-ay.
The traveller comes and goes along the highway.
ki-aa lay aa-i-aa ki-aa palai paa-ay.
What did he bring when he came, and what will he take away when he goes?
vin naavai totaa sabh thaa-ay.
Without the Name, one loses everywhere.
laahaa milai jaa day-ay bujhaa-ay.
The profit is earned, when the Lord grants understanding.
vanaj vaapaar vanjai vaapaaree.
In merchandise and trade, the merchant is trading.
vin naavai kaisee pat saaree. ||16||
Without the Name, how can one find honor and nobility? ||16||

In plain words

Without the Naam, even your own body turns against you.

So why not meet the One, and let the ache in your mind ease?

We are travelers passing through — what did we bring when we came, what will we carry when we leave?

Without the Naam, every road runs at a loss; the profit comes when the One gives understanding.

The merchant buys and sells and trades — but without the Naam, what honor, what worth is there?

Meet the One, and the low-grade ache in the mind can ease.
The deeper layer

Vayrodh sareer — without the Name even the body is at war with itself. Vaat vataa-oo — the traveler on the highway, an image of transience. Laahaa milai jaa day-ay bujhaa-ay — the gain is given, not seized (grace). Merchant imagery of the true trade.

A Question to Sit With

What helps quiet your mind when it feels at war with itself?
