Find the One: Searcher and Sought Were Never Two

ਨੰਨਾ ਨਿਸਿ ਦਿਨੁ ਨਿਰਖਤ ਜਾਈ ॥
nannaa nis din nirkhat jaa-ee.
NANNA: The days and nights go by; I am looking for the Lord.
ਨਿਰਖਤ ਨੈਨ ਰਹੇ ਰਤਵਾਈ ॥
nirkhat nain rahay ratvaa-ee.
Looking for Him, my eyes have become blood-shot.
ਨਿਰਖਤ ਨਿਰਖਤ ਜਬ ਜਾਇ ਪਾਵਾ ॥
nirkhat nirkhat jab jaa-ay paavaa.
After looking and looking, when He is finally found,

then the one who was looking merges into the One who was looked for. ||26||

In plain words

**N** — day and night, I keep looking. I search and search for the One my heart longs for. My eyes ache from watching so hard, waiting for a glimpse.

And then — after all that looking — the One is found. And here is the wonder: the moment I truly find, the searcher and the sought become one. There was never really a gap between us. The one who was looking melts into the One who was being looked for, like a river reaching the sea.

When you finally find the One you've been longing for, you discover the searcher and the sought were never truly separate.
The deeper layer

The letter Nanna. nis din nirkhat jaa-ee — days and nights pass in seeking. The intense image nirkhat nain rahay ratvaa-ee — the seeker's eyes grow red and weary from watching — conveys the ache of longing, kept here as the tender labor of love rather than distress. The turn comes at the end: lay nirkhahi nirakh milaavaa — the seer merges into the Seen. This is Kabir's non-dual heart: the seeker discovers that the separation driving the search was itself the illusion. You do not find the divine as an object across a distance; you dissolve into what you were never truly apart from. It echoes the whole project's lens on Ik Onkar — there is no second.

A Question to Sit With

Is there something you've been searching hard for — and could it be closer to you than it feels?
