Ragmala (Garland of the Raags), part 5 — the household of Hindol
Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
Taylangee and Dayvkaree come;
Basantee and Sandoor follow, lovely to hear;
then comes the sweet Aheeree, the finest of the wives.
These five wives come together.
The sons: Surmaanand and Bhaaskar come,
and Chandrabinb and Mangalan follow.
Then come Sarasbaan and Binodaa,
and the thrilling songs of Basant and Kamodaa.
These are the eight sons I have named.
Then comes the turn of Deepak.
The household of Hindol is filled out, and then the garland turns to Deepak.
Hindol's five raagnee, its companion melodies, are named first. Then come its eight sons, the smaller tunes. Basant is among them. Basant is also a full raag of springtime, found elsewhere in the book.
When the list is done, it is Deepak's turn.
Think of a relay race where each runner hands the baton to the next. The garland moves the same way, from one family to the next, like a thread running from flower to flower.
In a long playlist, how does one song hand its mood over to the one that follows?
