Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

O my mind, why are you so sad?

My true Guru is perfect — the giver of blessings, the treasure of every comfort, his Pool of Nectar always brimming over.

When you're low, it helps to remind your own mind: the well is always overflowing.
The deeper layer

This one is about gently cheering up your own sad heart.

Man ki-o bairaag karhigaa — O my mind, why are you so sad? The soul talks kindly to its own mind, like a parent sitting beside a child who is feeling low.

This is the "rahaa-o," the pause line. It is the center of the shabad.

The cure here is not to think the sadness through. It is to remember. Satgur mayraa pooraa — my true Guru is perfect. Amrit sar sad hee bharpooraa — the pool of nectar, the sweet water of life, is always full to the brim.

Picture a well that never runs dry, however many buckets you pull. There is always enough. Sadness just forgets that for a while.

A Question to Sit With

What would you say to comfort your own mind on a sad day?
