Let Go of Envy and Serve Within Your Own Heart

Others' wealth, others' wives, and the slander of others - renounce your craving for these.

Serve the Lord's Lotus Feet within your heart, and hold to the Support of the Perfect Guru. ||3||

In plain words

Others' wealth, others' spouses, and the running-down of others — let go of your craving for all of these.

Serve the One's Lotus Feet within your heart, and hold to the support of the perfect Guru.

Let go of envying what others have and tearing others down — and serve, instead, within your own heart.
The deeper layer

Let go of wanting what belongs to others. Serve the One inside your heart instead.

The verse names three old temptations. The first is wanting other people's money and things. The second is wanting someone else's husband or wife. The third is nindaa, running other people down behind their backs. In si-o preet nivaar — let go of your love for these.

Then it gives the better thing to do. Serve the One's "lotus feet," a picture of the One's gentle presence, inside your heart. Lean on the perfect Guru.

It is like weeding a garden and then planting flowers where the weeds were. Letting go and serving go together. Another Aasaa shabad speaks about running others down in the same way.

A Question to Sit With

Which is harder to let go of: wanting what others have, or judging them?
