Houses and Palaces Stay; Only the Name Goes

ਗ੍ਰਿਹੁ ਮੰਦਰ ਮਹਲਾ ਜੋ ਦੀਸਹਿ ਨਾ ਕੋਈ ਸੰਗਾਰਿ ॥

Houses, mansions and palaces which you see - none of these shall go with you.

jab lag jeeveh kalee kaal meh jan naanak naam samHaar. ||4||37||
As long as you live in this Dark Age of Kali Yuga, O servant Nanak, remember the Naam, the Name of the Lord. ||4||37||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The houses, mansions, and palaces you see — none of them will go with you.

As long as you live in this age, servant Nanak, remember the Name.

The houses and palaces stay behind — only the Name goes with you.
The deeper layer

Houses and palaces stay behind. The Name is what you take with you.

Garihu mandar mehlaa jo deeseh naa ko-ee sangaar — the houses, mansions, and palaces you see, none of them will go along with you.

Think of a school trip. You cannot bring your whole room. But you can bring what is in your heart. So the verse gives the one thing to do with a life: naam samhaar, remember the Name, for as long as you live in this age. Things stay here. The Name goes with you, even past death.

A Question to Sit With

What would you focus on if you really took to heart that none of your things come with you?
