Our Actions Set Patterns, and Time Catches Everyone

ਜੀਅ ਜੰਤ ਜਹਾ ਜਹਾ ਲਗੁ ਕਰਮ ਕੇ ਬਸਿ ਜਾਇ ॥
jee-a jant jahaa jahaa lag karam kay bas jaa-ay.
Wherever the beings and creatures are, they are born according to the karma of their past actions.
ਕਾਲ ਫਾਸ ਅਬਧ ਲਾਗੇ ਕਛੁ ਨ ਚਲੈ ਉਪਾਇ ॥੩॥
kaal faas abaDh laagay kachh na chalai upaa-ay. ||3||
The noose of death is unforgiving, and it shall catch them; it cannot be warded off. ||3||

In plain words

Every living thing lives out the patterns set in motion by what came before.

And time catches up with all of us in the end — no one escapes it.

Our actions set patterns, and time catches up with everyone — clear truths that make the way out all the more precious.
The deeper layer

Ravi Daas states two sober truths plainly. First, beings are born according to the karma of their past actions — we each live within patterns set in motion by what came before, the natural consequences of things done. Second, the memento-mori: the noose of death is unforgiving; it catches everyone. Time catches up with all of us; no one escapes the ending. These are not cheerful lines, but Ravi Daas isn't trying to depress — he's clearing away illusions so that the hope of the final verse lands with full weight. If our patterns shape us and time is short, then the one thing that can free us from both — Guru-given wisdom, coming next — becomes infinitely precious. Sometimes you have to see the hard truth clearly before you reach for what saves.

A Question to Sit With

Why might it help to face hard truths honestly, rather than pretend they aren't there?
