- O Nanak, such a servant crosses over the ocean of Maya. ||4||5||56||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The Guru gives the Nectar-Fruit of the Name.

Whoever receives it, says Nanak, is a servant who crosses over the ocean of illusion.

Receive the Nectar-Fruit, and it carries you across the very poison that surrounded you.
The deeper layer

This one says the fruit of the Name carries you safely across everything that could poison you.

Amrit fal naam jin gur tay paa-i-aa means "whoever receives the nectar-fruit of the Name from the Guru." The fruit is a gift from the Guru, not something we grab on our own.

Daas taree tin maa-i-aa means "that servant crosses over Maya." Maya is the pull of greed and wanting more, like a wide sea. It is the same poison that ringed the garden in the pause line.

Think of a packed lunch that gives you energy for a long hike. The fruit of the Name is like that. It feeds you, and it also gets you there. It is both food for the journey and the way across.

A Question to Sit With

What nourishment in your life also helps carry you through hard things?
