Sikhism·Raag Aasaa·Shabad 151
Verse 3 of 5

Receive What You're Given as a Gift

ਤੁਮਰਾ ਦੀਆ ਪੈਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਉ ਖਾਈ ॥
tumraa dee-aa painHa-o khaa-eeN.
Whatever You give me, I wear and eat.
ਤਉ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਸੁਖੀ ਵਲਾਈ ॥੨॥
ta-o parsaad parabh sukhee valaa-eeN. ||2||
By Your Grace, O God, my life passes peacefully. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Whatever You give me, I wear and eat.

By Your grace, God, my life passes in peace.

Receive what you're given as a gift, and a life can pass in peace.
The deeper layer

Contentment made concrete: "whatever You give me, I wear and eat." No demanding a different portion — the soul simply receives its clothing and food as gifts, and so "my life passes peacefully." Peace is in the receiving, not in the getting-more (cf. Shabad 105, the guest given his meals).

A Question to Sit With

How might gratitude for what you have change the feel of your days?
