Sikhism·Raag Aasaa·Shabad 151
Verse 5 of 5

The One Thing Worth Praying For Is Freedom

ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਿਤ ਇਵੈ ਧਿਆਈ ॥
kaho naanak nit ivai Dhi-aa-eeN.
Says Nanak, this is my continual meditation:
ਗਤਿ ਹੋਵੈ ਸੰਤਹ ਲਗਿ ਪਾਈ ॥੪॥੯॥੬੦॥
gat hovai santeh lag paa-eeN. ||4||9||60||
that I may be emancipated, clinging to the Feet of the Saints. ||4||9||60||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Says Nanak: this is my unceasing prayer —

that I find freedom, clinging to the Feet of the Saints.

The one thing worth praying for unceasingly is freedom, found by holding to good company.
The deeper layer

The close names the soul's one continual prayer: not for things, but "that I may be emancipated, clinging to the Feet of the Saints." Freedom is sought in humility and company — holding to the Saints — rather than in any acquisition.

A Question to Sit With

If you could ask for only one thing, over and over, what would it be?
