Verse 4 of 5

The One Makes and Unmakes All, Yet Stays Free

ਓਪਤਿ ਪਰਲਉ ਖਿਨ ਮਹਿ ਕਰਤਾ ॥
opat parla-o khin meh kartaa.
He creates and destroys in an instant.
ਆਪਿ ਅਲੇਪਾ ਨਿਰਗੁਨੁ ਰਹਤਾ ॥੩॥
aap alaypaa nirgun rahtaa. ||3||
He Himself remains unattached, and without attributes. ||3||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

In an instant He creates and destroys.

He Himself stays unattached, beyond all attributes.

The One makes and unmakes everything in an instant, yet stays free of it all.
The deeper layer

The One makes and unmakes everything, yet is never stuck to any of it.

Opat parla-o khin meh kartaa — in a moment, the One creates and ends things. Yet aap alaypaa nirgun rahtaa. Alaypaa means untouched, not stuck. Nirgun means beyond any quality we could name.

Think of a kid building a sand city at the beach. They build it with joy. When the tide comes in, they smile and let it go. The One is busy in everything, but held by nothing. Another shabad says the same thing: the One takes every form and still stays free.

A Question to Sit With

How can something be fully involved in everything and yet attached to nothing?
