anand karai naanak kaa su-aamee. ||4||13||64||
Nanak's Lord and Master celebrates in bliss. ||4||13||64||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

He is the Maker, the cause of all causes. He knows every heart from within.

Nanak's Master celebrates in bliss.

The One who holds everything together does so in delight, not grimness.
The deeper layer

The One who makes everything does it all with joy.

Karan karaavan antarjaamee — the One is the Maker, the reason behind every reason, and antarjaamee, the One who knows every heart from the inside. Then comes a happy surprise: anand karai naanak kaa su-aamee. Nanak's Master is full of joy.

So the ground of everything is not grim or serious. Think of a grandmother cooking for the whole family. She is busy all day, and she hums while she works. The One holds every bead on the string and knows every heart, and does it in delight. Another shabad says the same: the One looks at creation and rejoices.

A Question to Sit With

What changes if the ground of everything is joyful rather than indifferent?
