Verse 5 of 5

The Name Is the One Rosary You Carry Past Death

ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਜੋ ਰਾਚੈ ਨਾਇ ॥
kaho naanak jo raachai naa-ay.
Says Nanak, one who is imbued with the Name,
ਹਰਿ ਮਾਲਾ ਤਾ ਕੈ ਸੰਗਿ ਜਾਇ ॥੪॥੧੯॥੭੦॥
har maalaa taa kai sang jaa-ay. ||4||19||70||
goes to the next world with the maalaa of the Lord's Name. ||4||19||70||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Says Nanak: the one soaked in the Name

goes to the next world carrying the rosary of the Name.

The Name is the one rosary you carry with you past death.
The deeper layer

The Name is the one thing you carry with you when you leave this world.

Kaho naanak jo raachai naa-ay — says Nanak, the one who is soaked in the Name. Raachai means dyed through, like cloth soaked in color. Har maalaa taa kai sang jaa-ay — the rosary of the Name goes along with that person.

When we leave this life, toys, phones and money stay behind. Think of a scent that has soaked into a scarf. Wherever the scarf goes, the scent goes. The Name soaked into the soul goes with it into the next world.

A Question to Sit With

What is the one thing you'd want to carry beyond everything you'll leave behind?
