Let Go of Grasping and Illusion Has Nothing to Grab

ਸਗਲ ਤਿਆਗਿ ਹਰਿ ਸਰਣੀ ਆਇਆ ॥
sagal ti-aag har sarnee aa-i-aa.
One who renounces everything, and enters the Lord's Sanctuary
ਤਿਸੁ ਜਨ ਕਹਾ ਬਿਆਪੈ ਮਾਇਆ ॥੨॥
tis jan kahaa bi-aapai maa-i-aa. ||2||
- how can Maya cling to him? ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Someone lets go of everything and comes into the One's shelter.

How could the world's false pull ever cling to him?

Let go of grasping, and illusion has nothing left to grab onto.
The deeper layer

If you are not grabbing at things, nothing can grab hold of you.

Sagal ti-aag har sarnee aa-i-aa — someone lets go of everything and comes into the One's shelter. Then comes a question that already knows its answer: how could Maya cling to such a person? Maa-i-aa (Maya) is the pull of the world, the shine of things that tempt us.

Think of a hook. It only catches a fish that bites. If you are not reaching for the bait, the hook has nothing to hold. When the soul has let go of all its grabbing, the world's pull finds nothing to catch.

A Question to Sit With

What loses its grip on you the moment you stop reaching for it?
