The Passions Lead to Ruin; Remembrance to Rescue

ਆਸਾ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥

Aasaa, Fifth Mehl:
ਕਾਮਿ ਕ੍ਰੋਧਿ ਅਹੰਕਾਰਿ ਵਿਗੂਤੇ ॥
kaam kroDh ahaNkaar vigootay.
Sexual desire, anger, and egotism lead to ruin.
ਹਰਿ ਸਿਮਰਨੁ ਕਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਜਨ ਛੂਟੇ ॥੧॥

Meditating on the Lord, the Lord's humble servants are redeemed. ||1||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Lust, anger, and ego lead straight to ruin.

Meditating on the One, His servants are saved.

The passions lead one way, remembrance the other — to ruin, or to rescue.
The deeper layer

The shabad sets two paths side by side from the first line: the passions (lust, anger, ego) "lead to ruin," while "the Lord's humble servants are redeemed" by meditation. The Panch Vikaar and the Name are the two roads, ending in ruin or rescue.

A Question to Sit With

Which of your inner pulls lead you toward ruin, and which toward peace?
