Sikhism·Raag Aasaa·Shabad 164
Verse 2 of 5

Illusion Is a Wine; Remembrance Keeps You Awake

ਸੋਇ ਰਹੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਮਦ ਮਾਤੇ ॥
so-ay rahay maa-i-aa mad maatay.
The mortals are asleep, intoxicated with the wine of Maya.
ਜਾਗਤ ਭਗਤ ਸਿਮਰਤ ਹਰਿ ਰਾਤੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
jaagat bhagat simrat har raatay. ||1|| rahaa-o.
The devotees remain awake, imbued with the Lord's meditation. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Most people are asleep, drunk on the wine of illusion.

The devotees stay awake, soaked in remembrance of the One.

Illusion is a wine that lulls people to sleep — remembrance is what keeps you awake.
The deeper layer

The Pause gives the governing contrast: the world "asleep, intoxicated with the wine of Maya," versus the devotees who "remain awake, imbued with the Lord's meditation." Maya is a wine that lulls the soul to sleep; remembrance is what keeps the devotee awake (cf. Shabad 30, Shabad 130).

A Question to Sit With

What lulls you to sleep, and what keeps you truly awake?
