You Live in the One Like a Fish in Water

ਆਸਾ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥

Aasaa, Fifth Mehl:
ਤੂ ਮੇਰਾ ਤਰੰਗੁ ਹਮ ਮੀਨ ਤੁਮਾਰੇ ॥
too mayraa tarang ham meen tumaaray.
You are my waves, and I am Your fish.
ਤੂ ਮੇਰਾ ਠਾਕੁਰੁ ਹਮ ਤੇਰੈ ਦੁਆਰੇ ॥੧॥
too mayraa thaakur ham tayrai du-aaray. ||1||
You are my Lord and Master; I wait at Your Door. ||1||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

You are my waves, and I am Your fish.

You are my Master; I wait at Your door.

You live in the One the way a fish lives in water — surrounded, carried, sustained.
The deeper layer

A tender love-simile: "You are my waves, and I am Your fish." The fish lives wholly within the water — surrounded, carried, sustained by it, unable to live apart from it. So the soul lives in the One. And it "waits at Your Door," the posture of patient devotion (cf. Shabad 86, Shabad 90).

A Question to Sit With

What surrounds and sustains you the way water sustains a fish?
