The Humblest Prayer: Let Me Serve the Good

Their company is cherished even by the gods and the angels.

Blessed is their Darshan, and fruitful is their service.

O Lord, Treasure of Excellence, please bless me with the service of the Saints. ||4||37||88||

In plain words

Their company is treasured even by gods and angels; blessed is their sight, fruitful their service.

With palms pressed together, Nanak prays: Lord, bless me with the service of the Saints.

The humblest and best prayer may simply be: let me serve those who are truly good.
The deeper layer

The close: the Saints' company is prized "even by the gods and the angels," their sight (Darshan) blessed, their service "fruitful." And Nanak's prayer is not to be a Saint but to serve them: "bless me with the service of the Saints." The humblest wish — to serve the awakened — is the whole prayer.

A Question to Sit With

Whose service would you consider a privilege rather than a burden?
