The Soul Asks Not for Status but the Sight of the Good

ਆਠ ਪਹਰ ਕਰ ਜੋੜਿ ਧਿਆਵਉ ॥

Twenty-four hours a day, with palms pressed together, I meditate;

I yearn to obtain the Blessed Vision of the Darshan of those Holy Saints.

In plain words

All day, with palms pressed together, I meditate; I yearn for the sight of those holy Saints.

Merge me, the poor one, into You; Nanak has come to Your Sanctuary.

The soul asks not for status but for the sight of the good and to be merged into the One.
The deeper layer

At the end, the soul asks for only two things: to see good people, and to melt into the One.

Aath pahar kar jorh Dhi-aava-o — all day and night, with palms pressed together, I remember. Aath pahar means the eight watches of the day, so all the time. The prayer is to see the holy ones, their darshan, a loving sight of them.

Mohi gareeb ka-o layho ralaa-ay — take me, the poor one, and blend me into You. Picture a raindrop falling into the sea. It does not ask for a title. It just wants to be home.

So Guru Arjan does not ask for status. He asks to see the good and to be joined to the One. Naanak aa-ay pa-ay sarnaa-ay — Nanak has come to Your shelter, and he rests there.

A Question to Sit With

What would you ask for, if you asked only for what truly matters?
