The Cosmic Accountants Can't Even See His Devotees

ਚਿਤ੍ਰ ਗੁਪਤੁ ਸਭ ਲਿਖਤੇ ਲੇਖਾ ॥
chitar gupat sabh likh-tay laykhaa.
Chitra and Gupat, the recording angels of the conscious and the unconscious, write the accounts of all mortal beings,
ਭਗਤ ਜਨਾ ਕਉ ਦ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਨ ਪੇਖਾ ॥੪॥
bhagat janaa ka-o darisat na paykhaa. ||4||
but they cannot even see the Lord's humble devotees. ||4||

In plain words

Chitra and Gupt are the angels who keep the record.

They write the accounts of all, of what is known and what is hidden —

but they cannot even see the Lord's devotees.

The cosmic accountants who tally everyone's deeds cannot even see the One's devotees.
The deeper layer

Even the angels who keep everyone's record cannot find the One's devotees.

In old stories, Chitra and Gupt are two recording angels. They write down the deeds of every living being, the seen and the hidden. They keep the account of everyone's karma, of what each one has done.

Bhagat janaa ka-o darisat na paykhaa — they cannot even see the devotees, the people who love the One. Picture someone checking a long list, and some names are simply not there. The devotees pass by unseen. Grace has wiped their account clean, as another Raag Aasaa shabad also says. So the record-keepers cannot even find them.

A Question to Sit With

What would it mean to pass unseen by the record-keepers, held safe by grace?
