Meeting the Guru Ends the Inner War

ਗੁਰ ਪੂਰੇ ਮਿਲਿ ਝਗਰੁ ਚੁਕਾਇਆ ॥
gur pooray mil jhagar chukaa-i-aa.
Meeting with the Perfect Guru, conflict is ended,
ਪੰਚ ਦੂਤ ਸਭਿ ਵਸਗਤਿ ਆਇਆ ॥੩॥
panch doot sabh vasgat aa-i-aa. ||3||
and the five demons are totally subdued. ||3||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

When I meet the perfect Guru, all the fighting ends.

And the five demons are all brought under control.

Meeting the Guru ends the inner war — the five passions finally subdued.
The deeper layer

This one says meeting the Guru ends the fight going on inside.

Gur pooray mil jhagar chukaa-i-aa — "meeting the perfect Guru, the quarrel ended." Panch doot sabh vasgat aa-i-aa — "the five troublemakers are all brought under control."

The five are strong desire, anger, greed, clinging, and pride. In Sikh teaching they are called the Panch Vikaar. They are what start the fight inside us. Think of a class with five loud kids pulling everyone off track. When a good teacher walks in, the room settles. Peace inside comes when the Guru helps us steady our own passions. Other shabads in Aasaa teach this too.

A Question to Sit With

What inner conflict would you most want to see come to an end?
