Sikhism·Raag Aasaa·Shabad 190
Verse 3 of 4

Held by the One, You Reach a Fearless Dignity

ਸਗਲ ਸਮਗ੍ਰੀ ਗ੍ਰਿਹ ਜਾ ਕੈ ਪੂਰਨ ॥
sagal samagree garih jaa kai pooran.
His house is filled with all sorts of articles;
ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕੇ ਸੇਵਕ ਦੂਖ ਨ ਝੂਰਨ ॥
parabh kay sayvak dookh na jhooran.
God's servants never suffer pain.
ਓਟਿ ਗਹੀ ਨਿਰਭਉ ਪਦੁ ਪਾਈਐ ॥
ot gahee nirbha-o pad paa-ee-ai.
Holding to His Support, the state of fearless dignity is obtained.
ਸਾਸਿ ਸਾਸਿ ਸੋ ਗੁਨ ਨਿਧਿ ਗਾਈਐ ॥੩॥
saas saas so gun niDh gaa-ee-ai. ||3||
With each and every breath, sing of the Lord, the treasure of excellence. ||3||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

His house is filled with every good thing; His servants never suffer pain.

Holding to His support, you reach a fearless dignity; with every breath, sing of the One, the treasure of excellence.

Held by the One, you reach a fearless dignity — and sing with every breath.
The deeper layer

This one is about the calm, fearless dignity of someone who knows they are held.

Sagal samagree garih jaa kai pooran — the One's house is full of every good thing. Parabh kay sayvak dookh na jhooran — those who serve the One don't sink into sorrow.

Ot gahee nirbha-o pad paa-ee-ai — holding on to the One's support, you reach a fearless, steady place.

This is not showing off or acting big. It is the calm of a small child on a parent's shoulders in a big crowd. The child feels safe, because the child is being held.

And the practice never stops. Saas saas so gun niDh gaa-ee-ai — with every breath, sing of the One, the treasure of all goodness.

A Question to Sit With

What is the difference between arrogance and a calm, fearless dignity?
