In plain words

I have found the perfect Guru, my friends. In his sanctuary, all illness, sorrow, and suffering are cleared away.

The Guru's feet live in my heart. I have received all my heart's desires. The fire has gone out, and I am wholly at peace. The Guru, in mercy, has given this gift.

In the right shelter, the inner fire goes out and a deep peace is given.
The deeper layer

This one says that in the Guru's shelter, the fire inside goes out.

The first lines are the Rahao, the "pause" line, the center of the shabad. In the true Guru's shelter, all illness, sorrow, and suffering lift.

Then the verse goes on. The Guru's feet stay in the heart, a way of saying humble love for the Guru. Every wish comes true. And the fire goes out. That fire is the burning of a restless mind. (See also Shabad 169.) Think of a hot, noisy kitchen that finally goes cool and quiet.

All of it is called a gift, daat. It is not something earned. It is given.

A Question to Sit With

Where do you find a shelter that genuinely quiets your suffering?
