Worthless as You Feel, the Beloved Holds You Close

ਨੈਣ ਪਸੰਦੋ ਸੋਇ ਪੇਖਿ ਮੁਸਤਾਕ ਭਈ ॥
nain pasando so-ay paykh mustaak bha-ee.
He is so beautiful to my eyes; beholding Him, I have been bewitched.
ਮੈ ਨਿਰਗੁਣਿ ਮੇਰੀ ਮਾਇ ਆਪਿ ਲੜਿ ਲਾਇ ਲਈ ॥੩॥
mai nirgun mayree maa-ay aap larh laa-ay la-ee. ||3||
I am worthless, O my mother; He Himself has attached me to the hem of His robe. ||3||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

He is so beautiful to my eyes; beholding Him, I am bewitched.

I am worthless, O my mother — yet He Himself has attached me to the hem of His robe.

Worthless as you may feel, the Beloved Himself holds you to the hem of His robe.
The deeper layer

This one says that even when you feel you have nothing to offer, the Beloved holds you close.

Nain pasando — He is beautiful to my eyes. Seeing Him, I am filled with wonder. Then an honest line: mai nirgun — I have no good qualities of my own. And yet aap larh laa-ay la-ee — He Himself has tied me to the hem of His robe.

This is grace beyond earning. The soul brings nothing, yet the Beloved takes it close. Think of a small child holding a parent's coat in a crowd. The child did nothing to earn it; the parent simply keeps them near. Another hymn tells the same story: an orphan made into a queen.

A Question to Sit With

What is it like to be kept close by someone, not for what you offer, but freely?
