In plain words

How treacherous is this world-ocean — and how few realize it!

Salvation rests in the One's Sanctuary; O Nanak, this is the destiny written for you.

The waters are treacherous and few even notice — safety is in the Sanctuary.
The deeper layer

This one names the danger plainly, and then the safe place.

This world is like a wild ocean, mahaa bikham, very hard to cross. And so few people even notice it.

The safe place is the One's shelter. You do not cross this water by being a strong swimmer. You cross it by taking refuge. Think of a storm at sea. The smart thing is not to swim harder, but to head into the harbor.

And even reaching that harbor is itself a gift of grace. Nanak calls it what was written for you.

A Question to Sit With

What danger do most people overlook, that you'd be wise to take seriously?
