Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Reflect on the essence of reality, O Saintly ones, and no troubles will touch you.

All the thieves will be destroyed, as the Gurmukhs remain wakeful.

A wakeful soul, reflecting on what's real, can't be robbed by the thieves within.
The deeper layer

This is the pause line, the Rahao, the center of the shabad. Its message: stay awake inside, and nothing can be stolen from you.

"Reflect upon the essence of reality," it says, "and no troubles shall afflict you." Then the Gurmukhs, those who face the Guru, stay awake, and "all the thieves" are destroyed. The thieves are the passions inside us, like anger and greed.

A house with its lights on and people awake is hard to rob. A wakeful soul is the same. Thinking about what is real, it loses nothing to the thieves within. Another Aasaa shabad also speaks of waking up.

A Question to Sit With

What gets 'stolen' from you when you're not awake and attentive?
