Verse 5 of 5

Everyone Is Drunk on Something: Poison or Truth

ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਮਦੁ ਜੋ ਪੀਵਤੇ ਬਿਖਲੀ ਪਤਿ ਕਮਲੀ ॥
durmat mad jo peevtay bikhlee pat kamlee.
Those fools, who drink in the wine of evil-mindedness, become the husbands of prostitutes.
ਰਾਮ ਰਸਾਇਣਿ ਜੋ ਰਤੇ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਚ ਅਮਲੀ ॥੪॥੧੨॥੧੧੪॥
raam rasaa-in jo ratay naanak sach amlee. ||4||12||114||
But those who are imbued with the sublime essence of the Lord, O Nanak, are intoxicated with the Truth. ||4||12||114||

In plain words

Those fools who drink the wine of a poisoned mind give their hearts to what is false.

But those soaked in the essence of the One, O Nanak, are drunk on the Truth.

Everyone is drunk on something — the question is whether it's a poison or the Truth.
The deeper layer

Everyone gets drunk on something. The only question is on what.

The verse sets two kinds of drunkenness side by side. One is "the wine of evil-mindedness," durmat, a bent and twisted way of thinking. It ties the soul to what is false. The other is the sweet essence of the One. It fills a person with Truth.

Think of how a game can swallow a whole afternoon. Something always grabs us like that. It can be a poison that leaves us worse. Or it can be the nectar of the One that leaves us better. Another Aasaa shabad makes the same contrast.

A Question to Sit With

What are you 'intoxicated' with, and does it leave you better or worse?
