Aasaa, Fifth Mehl:
ਉਦਮੁ ਕੀਆ ਕਰਾਇਆ ਆਰੰਭੁ ਰਚਾਇਆ ॥
udam kee-aa karaa-i-aa aarambh rachaa-i-aa.
I made the effort; I did it, and made a beginning.

naam japay jap jeevnaa gur mantar drirh-aa-i-aa. ||1||
I live by chanting and meditating on the Naam. The Guru has implanted this Mantra within me. ||1||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

I made the effort; I set out and made a beginning.

I live by chanting and meditating on the Name — the Guru has implanted this Mantra within me.

You make the beginning; grace plants the seed — both together.
The deeper layer

Effort and grace together: "I made the effort... and made a beginning," and "the Guru has implanted this Mantra within me." The soul takes the first step (the beginning), and the Guru plants the seed; neither alone is enough. You begin; grace completes (cf. Shabad 44).

A Question to Sit With

What good thing began with your small effort and was completed by something beyond you?
