The Truly Beautiful Soul Pleases Its Maker

tis hee chaj seegaar sabh saa-ee roop apaar ree.
She alone is cultured and embellished, and she alone is of incomparable beauty.

saa-ee sohagan naankaa jo bhaanee kartaar ree. ||4||16||118||
She alone is the happy soul-bride, O Nanak, who is pleasing to the Creator Lord. ||4||16||118||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

She alone has fine ways and true adornment. She alone has beauty beyond compare.

She alone is the happy bride, O Nanak, who pleases the Creator.

The truly beautiful soul is the one that pleases the One who made it.
The deeper layer

The shabad ends by saying what real beauty is.

Saa-ee roop apaar — she alone has beauty beyond measure. Which one? Jo bhaanee kartaar — the one who pleases the Creator. It is not her looks or fine manners that make her lovely. What makes her lovely is pleasing the One.

Think of a drawing you make for someone you love. It is beautiful because it makes them happy, not because of what others think. The happy bride, the sohagan, is known by the Beloved's joy in her, not by the world's eyes.

A Question to Sit With

Whose pleasure defines real beauty for you?
