Sikhism·Raag Aasaa·Shabad 234
Verse 1 of 4

The Purest Want Is the Love of the One, Not Its Gifts

ਆਸਾ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ਤਿਪਦੇ ॥
aasaa mehlaa 5 tipday.
Aasaa, Fifth Mehl, Tipadas:
ਓਹਾ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਪਿਰੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ohaa paraym piree. ||1|| rahaa-o.
I seek the Love of my Beloved. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

I seek only the Love of my Beloved.

Of all things to want, the purest is simply the love of the One — not its gifts.
The deeper layer

The Pause is a single, pure desire: "I seek the Love of my Beloved." Of all things a soul could want, this one wants only love — not its gifts, but the Beloved Himself. The whole shabad will measure everything against this one longing (cf. Shabad 62).

A Question to Sit With

What is the one thing you'd choose if you could ask for only the thing itself, not its rewards?
