The One Companion Who Will Never Leave You

ਸੰਗਿ ਸਹਾਈ ਛੋਡਿ ਨ ਜਾਈ ਓਹੁ ਅਗਹ ਅਤੋਲਾ ॥੧॥
sang sahaa-ee chhod na jaa-ee oh agah atolaa. ||1||
The Lord is my Companion and Helper; He shall not forsake me or leave me. He is unfathomable and unequalled. ||1||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The One is my Companion and Helper. He will never leave me or let me go.

He is deeper than anyone can know, and no one is equal to Him.

The one Companion who will never forsake or leave you.
The deeper layer

This one says the One is a friend who will never leave you.

Sang sahaa-ee — the One is with me and helps me. Chhod na jaa-ee — He will not leave me and walk away. People we love can move away, or get busy, or let us down. This Helper stays. Guru Arjan speaks of this in another song too.

He is also agah and atolaa. That means too deep to measure and too great to weigh. Nothing else is like Him.

Think of your own shadow on a sunny day. You never have to call it. It is just there, beside you. The One's company is even closer than that, and it never fades.

A Question to Sit With

Who or what in your life feels like it will never leave?
