Verse 2 of 3

The Love That Stays Fresh Ends the Endless Returning

ਜੋ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਭਾਵੈ ਜਨਮਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ॥
jo parabh bhaavai janam na aavai.
One who is pleasing to God shall not be reincarnated again.
ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਭਗਤਿ ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਰਚੈ ॥੧॥
har paraym bhagat har pareet rachai. ||1||
He remains absorbed in the loving devotional worship of the Lord, in the Love of the Lord. ||1||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Whoever pleases God is not born again.

He stays wrapped in loving devotion, in the Love of the One.

The love that stays fresh is also the love that ends the endless returning.
The deeper layer

The love that stays fresh also ends the long round of coming back.

Jo prabh bhaavai janam na aavai — the one who is pleasing to the One is not born again and again. Gurbani speaks of a long circle of lives, being born and dying over and over. This verse says that circle can end.

How? Har praym bhagat har preet rachai — by staying wrapped up in loving devotion, in the One's love.

The fresh, never-old love of the pause line is the same love that sets us free. Think of a child running around a playground, round and round, until a parent calls and the child runs into their arms. The running stops because love has called them home.

A Question to Sit With

What is so absorbing and good that you'd never tire of it?
