Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Deal in the Name of the One,

and please the Saints.

Find the Beloved and sing His praises; play the inner music with the five instruments.

Trade in the Name, please the holy, and the inner music begins to play.
The deeper layer

Trade in the Name, and the music inside you begins to play.

This is the Rahao, the "pause" line at the center of the shabad. It lays out the whole path in one breath. Baapaar govind naa-ay — do your trading in the Name of the One. Guru Arjan often uses the picture of a shopkeeper. Some people deal in things that spoil. The wise deal in the Name, which never goes bad.

Then: please the Saadh Sant, the good and holy people. Find the Beloved. Sing the One's praises.

And last: panch naad toor bajaa-ay — play the inner music with the five instruments. Gurbani speaks of Anhad, a music inside that no hand plays. It is like a song you hear in your heart when you are truly happy. Another shabad in this raag describes it too. That music is the real orchestra.

A Question to Sit With

What inner 'music' starts when you turn fully toward what's good?
