Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Renounce lust, anger, and greed;

remember the Name of the One in your mind.

Meditation on the One is the only fruitful action.

Of everything you could do, only one thing truly bears lasting fruit: remembering the One.
The deeper layer

Only one thing bears fruit that lasts: remembering the One.

This is the Rahao, the "pause" line at the center of the shabad. It says it plainly. Kaam krodh lobh ti-aag — let go of kaam, runaway desire; krodh, anger; and lobh, greed.

Man simar gobind naam — O mind, remember the Name of the One. Har bhajan safal kaam — loving remembrance of the One is the only work that bears fruit.

Think of a tree in a garden. Some trees grow lots of leaves but no fruit. They look busy, but nothing comes of it. Of all the things a person could do, remembering the One is what grows fruit that lasts.

A Question to Sit With

What of your activity actually bears lasting fruit?
