Don't Just Drop the Bad; Attach to the Good

ਤਜਿ ਮਾਨ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਕਾਰ ਮਿਥਿਆ ਜਪਿ ਰਾਮ ਰਾਮ ਰਾਮ ॥

Renounce pride, attachment, corruption and falsehood, and chant the Name of the Lord, Raam, Raam, Raam.
ਮਨ ਸੰਤਨਾ ਕੈ ਚਰਨਿ ਲਾਗੁ ॥੧॥
man santnaa kai charan laag. ||1||
O mortal, attach yourself to the Feet of the Saints. ||1||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Renounce pride, attachment, corruption, and falsehood, and chant the Name of the One.

O mortal, attach yourself to the Feet of the Saints.

Don't just drop the bad — attach yourself to the good, to the feet of the holy.
The deeper layer

Don't just drop the bad; hold on to the good.

Taj maan moh vikaar mithi-aa — let go of maan, pride; moh, clinging; vikaar, wrong ways; and mithi-aa, falseness. Jap raam raam raam — say the Name of the One, Raam, again and again.

Man santnaa kai charan laag — O mind, hold on to the feet of the Saints. To touch someone's feet is a way of showing deep respect and learning from them.

An empty hand does not stay empty for long. If you drop a bad habit, something needs to take its place. It is like quitting junk food and filling your plate with good food instead. Letting go and holding on are two parts of one turn.

A Question to Sit With

What good would you want to attach yourself to as you let go of the rest?
