Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
Let us wash the feet of the Saints; our evil-mindedness shall be cleansed.
Becoming the dust of the feet of the Lord's servants, one is not troubled by pain.
Taking shelter with His devotees, one is no longer caught in birth and death.
They alone become eternal who chant the Name of the One, O my mind.
This one says that humble service cleans the heart.
sant pag Dho-ee-ai — let us wash the feet of the Saints, the good and holy people. durmat kho-ee-ai — and our bad thinking is washed away. The verse also says to become the dust under their feet. That means being truly humble.
Think of the kid who stays after the party to help clean up. Nobody claps for that job. But it grows something good inside.
The verse says this humble service takes away pain. It even ends the round of birth and death. The lowliest acts, done for the good, do the highest work (see also Shabad 230).
What humble service might do more for you than any grand effort?
